It is always a great day when a shelter dog is adopted, especially one that has been in the shelter for a long time.

Recently, a shelter was overjoyed when Sora, a dog who had been in the shelter for 900 days, was finally adopted.

But the revelry turned to tears after the dog was returned to them just a day later.

Sora’s story began two and a half years ago when her owner surrendered her to the shelter.

Despite being a very sweet dog, Sora had trouble attracting the attention of potential adopters.

The shelter described her as a dog with “lots of energy” and perfect for an active household.

They added, “Sora is the dog you want to take with you on long walks or bike rides; trust us, she can keep up.”

However, the long wait in the kennel took its toll on Sora’s mental health.

The shelter staff noticed she was becoming anxious and they worried that the shelter was not the ideal place for such an active dog.

They did their best to keep her actively engaged, but it never seemed to be enough.

A glimmer of hope
After 900 days of waiting, Sora’s luck finally seemed to have turned.

A family came to the shelter and adopted her. Everyone was overjoyed and Sora’s tail wagged with excitement as she left the shelter with her new family.

However, their joy quickly turned into sadness when Sora was returned to the shelter 24 hours later.

The shelter posted a TikTok video showing a sad Sora back in her kennel along with another dog named Eros, who was also returned after a week.

The shelter staff was devastated, but they remained hopeful that Sora would find her forever home.

“Their tails wagged with hope when they were welcomed into their new homes. After a short period of time, however, these shelter dogs found themselves back in their kennels. They are still hopeful that somewhere there is their new home where they will be cherished as they deserve.” wrote Valley Animal Center.

Staff at the shelter say dogs like Sora needed time to adjust to their new home, especially after spending so many years at the shelter.

“Being in a shelter for years affects the mental health of our adopters, and for Sora it is no different,” said Sim Kaur of the shelter.

Despite the setback, everyone at the shelter was determined to find a true forever home for sweet Sora.

In a follow-up video on TikTok, the shelter announced that Sora was still available for adoption.

They stressed that the ideal home for Sora would be one where she is the only dog, with a family that can handle her active lifestyle and give her the time and patience she needs and deserves.

It is heartbreaking that after waiting so long for a home, Sora was returned after only one day.
