My husband of 17 years stole from me, I want to leave him.
Dana wrote us a letter and told us a story that made us feel a lot of different things. She put her story online because she wanted to know what people thought and if they thought she was right to get a divorce from her husband after what he did. The man stole from his wife, and Dana can’t forgive him. She is so angry and upset about her husband’s actions for many reasons.

Dana had something very valuable that she loved very much.

“I and my husband Derek have been happily married for over 17 years now,” Dana began her letter. The last thing that happened put our relationship and trust in each other at risk. We have two kids and our life has been generally happy.

“When I was five years old, my beloved Nana gave me her tea set,” the woman said. Her mother gave it to her. As the only girl among her 15 grandchildren, I was the only daughter she didn’t have, so she gave it to me. The whole set is simple, but it means a lot.

I don’t think it’s worth much in money, but to me, it has unmeasurable sentimental value. I loved it so much because it was something my grandmother had given me. I kept it and used it for a very long time. I even wanted to give it to my daughter or granddaughter someday. All of this is known to my husband Derek.

The tea set was used by the whole family and became a special part of life.

“Derek’s sister and her family came to stay with us for a week,” Dana said. I have a tea party with my special tea set every time their little girls come over. I bake cakes, cookies, and tea sandwiches.

In my family, we’ve done this for a very long time. Plus, my grandmother made tea parties a big deal for me, and I’m happy to keep that up. “So my sister-in-law, her daughters, and I had this tea party in the afternoon.”

A woman wrote, “A few weeks after that, my friend and her two little daughters came to visit us.” I planned a unique tea party. All morning, I baked and made sandwiches. When I went to get my tea set, it was gone.

It stays in a cabinet in my kitchen most of the time. It gets a gentle wash and is put away until the next time. It made me sad to see that it was gone, so I went looking for it. My friend came and went, and I still couldn’t find it. Both the tea party and my mood got worse.

Derek acted normally, so Dana didn’t think anything was wrong with him.

Dana said, “I looked for my valuable tea set for days and weeks, tearing my house apart.” Inside every cabinet, drawer, and cupboard, I looked. The whole house was turned upside down. Derek even helped me find it. He felt sorry for them and said it was too bad that the set was gone. Also, he insisted that it couldn’t have grown legs and left on its own.

It was Dana who said, “That’s what really gets to me.” Derek was sure he knew where it was, but he pretended I had lost it. He tried to make me feel better by telling me he would buy me a new set. Like a new set could be better than my grandmother’s.

The woman said, “A few days later, he came home with a cheap set that looked thin that he had bought somewhere.” It went in the trash. You can call me ungrateful, but I was so mad that he didn’t get how important my grandmother’s set was.

Something I treasure, something very special that my long-dead grandmother gave me, couldn’t be replaced, no matter how much, or how little, it would cost to buy a new one.

The shocking news came out of the blue.

“One day, I heard my husband on the phone,” Dana wrote. I heard him say to put “something” away and tell my niece Hailey not to bring it up when we visit because it still makes me mad. Yes, I knew that was what he meant even though he didn’t say the words “tea set.” “I walked in while Derek was still on the phone and called him a thief,” the woman said. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights. He hung up right away and tried to explain. I didn’t hear it. He was told to put my set back.

“Derek’s sister called me, and I called her a thief too,” Dana said. It was broken when she took my tea set, so I told her to return it in the same way or I would call the police. After that, I hung up on her. Derek tried to talk sense into me. He told me his little niece loved it so much. Things like that are really best for little girls.

So what’s the harm in letting her have it now? He was going to talk to me about leaving it to her anyway. It was too late for me to play with kid’s toys, he told me. I should grow up. That doesn’t mean anything; he just said I was too young. He meant that he doesn’t care about it, so I should forget about it.

Dana wrote, “I told the police about the theft the next day.” I also called my brother, who lives in the same city as the sister of my husband. My brother got my tea set by going around.
My husband was so mad that he called me a lot of bad names for a few days. He’s now writing me long messages in which he says sorry for everything. But I need a divorce right away. I hurt too much and don’t trust him anymore.
