As technology has improved, more and more single people date online. And some people hurt other people’s feelings in mean ways until karma strikes back. But if two people you match with on the app are acquaintances and one of them is a friend, you might need to step in. That’s what the main character in the next story did.

“This woman Lydia (24f) has a habit that really bothers me. I work with her.” She makes a dating profile just to get guys to buy her expensive dinners at restaurants she wants to try, and then she hangs up on them. Lydia lies about this all the time because she doesn’t want to date, but she’ll act like she does to sell it.

Lydia sees it as a way to try food or drinks she normally couldn’t afford. I don’t like it because it plays with people’s feelings.

“Daniel, my 32-year-old friend, is also on dating sites, but for the right reasons.” His wife died a few years ago, and he’s only recently started dating again. Daniel is a nice guy, and I really want him to find a lovely woman to marry.
He texted me a few days ago and asked if I knew Lydia. When they matched, they talked about work, which is how he found out that we both worked there. I told him everything about Lydia’s plans with the restaurant and made it clear that he would do his best to drop things off with her as soon as possible. Daniel said, “I think I’ll still go on the date, but I’ll ask for two separate checks.”

“Well, they went out over the weekend, and Lydia was very upset when she got to work on Monday.” She ripped me apart when I asked her about her date with Daniel. She asked if I was the one who told him not to pay for her dinner.

It sounds like she splurged when she had Daniel take her to a fancy steakhouse. Daniel only got a salad and a sandwich, while she got a drink, a full meal with a side dish, and dessert. She was almost in tears at work because she didn’t think she would be able to pay her bill, which was around $70. Plus, her car was running low on gas.
“She tried to use my friend as a real meal ticket, which made me mad too, but she didn’t see it that way.” Daniel told me later that the date was going pretty well until he asked for separate checks. After that, Lydia became very cold for no reason.

Lydia is mad at me now because I told someone about her little plan, which didn’t work out. But some people we work with told me I should have stayed out of it because it wasn’t my business. I don’t think I did anything wrong because I was just helping a friend who was sad.
