My husband proposed using the ring that his ex-girlfriend gave him.
One of the most powerful signs of love and commitment is an engagement ring. Through the good and bad times, it stands for the promise between two souls to spend their lives together. The ring that was supposed to be a symbol of her and her husband’s love is now tainted by a web of lies and deceit, which is bad news for our reader.

“All right, here’s the deal:

My husband “Jack” (35M) asked me to marry him ten years ago with a beautiful ring he said was a family heirloom. I was so happy that I had to say yes.

I found out the truth about where the ring came from yesterday at a family dinner. “Oh, that’s the ring Jack’s ex-girlfriend threw at him when they broke up!” my mother-in-law said without meaning to. I almost choked on my drink. “Emma,” his ex-girlfriend, picked out the style, and it was made just for her. They were only together for a year!

When I talked to him about it after dinner, I yelled, “How could you propose with Emma’s ring?” It wasn’t even an old family item!” He became angry and said he wanted to “reclaim” the ring and make it about our love story.

Jack: “Look, she never liked the ring or the work I put into making it.” I want to tell you a new, more meaningful story about it.”

“But it was made just for her!” It’s bad because of their past!”

Jack: “I’m sorry if it makes you feel bad, but it’s just a ring.” The important thing is our love.”

I feel betrayed and appreciate the thought behind his proposal at the same time. He says it’s not a big deal, but I don’t want to think of his ex every time I look at my engagement ring. Am I overreacting when I say I’m hurt and angry about this?”
