A woman takes her sick dog to be put down, and a year later she is shocked to see him up for adoption.

Euthanasia is sometimes the only humane way to help sick animals when they have no other choice. It is one of the hardest things a person can do.

A woman in Maryland took her dog to the vet to be put down, but a year later, she was shocked to see that he was available for adoption. She thought he was dead.

FOX 5 DC says that Kristie Pereira got her puppy Beau in 2022, but after only two months, the puppy started showing signs of a neurological condition.

She did what her vet told her to do and took Beau to the emergency room when his health didn’t get better. There, doctors told her that Beau probably had a serious illness. The vets told her to think about euthanasia because more tests would cost a lot of money and Beau’s quality of life was likely to get worse.

Kristie loved her puppy, but she took Beau to the Montgomery County Animal Services to say goodbye because the vets told her to and she thought it was the right thing to do.

Kristie told FOX 5 that someone who just wanted to get rid of the dog wouldn’t feel nearly as strongly about it as she does. We’ve all felt that way. “Like, none of it was simple.”

Animal Services told her they got it and that she should make the choice she thinks is best. Because of rules, Kristie wasn’t in the room when Beau was put down, but she thought her sick dog had been killed.

Kristie was shocked to see Beau alive and up for adoption this month, a year after it looked like he had been put down. That’s where she saw him on Facebook—the same page where she got her first dog.

What happened was that after Kristie gave up Beau, Montgomery County Animal Services found that his health problems could be fixed. He reportedly had surgery for a problem with his liver.

Beau eventually got better and was put up for adoption, but Kristie never heard about it because she was never contacted. She still thought her puppy was dead.

Kristie has been missing her dog since last year. She said it was like being on a “emotional roller coaster,” because she was happy to see him alive but also confused and angry about what was going on.

Montgomery County Animal Services told FOX 5 that this is in line with a rule that pet owners agree to when they bring their pets in to be put to sleep. They say that they don’t get in touch with pet owners who have given up their animals unless they call back and say they’re sorry.

It makes sense to not euthanize pets that could be helped. Some pet owners bring in pets just to get rid of them, so it’s better to give them a second chance at life.

However, Kristie loved her dog and was led to believe she had no choice because Beau’s health was only going to get worse. It seems wrong to not let her know that her dog was still alive.

Kristie wants answers, but Montgomery County Animal Services says they have to follow the rules. It’s not clear if Kristie will be able to get Beau back, but the group that took in the dog says it’s not their policy to give dogs back to owners who gave them up, no matter what the reason is.

You must be going through a very hard and confusing time. We hope there is more to this story and that Kristie can find her beloved dog who she thought was lost.
